What is Do Dham Yatra?

Do Dham Yatra is a pilgrimage to two of Uttarakhand’s four Char Dham shrines — most commonly Kedarnath and Badrinath, or Yamunotri and Gangotri. It follows the same sacred Himalayan route as the Char Dham Yatra but skips two shrines, so it can be completed in about 5-6 days instead of 10-12 days. It’s the preferred choice for pilgrims with limited leave, senior citizens, families travelling with children, or anyone doing a repeat visit to just Shiva and Vishnu’s abodes.

Kedarnath Dham – The Sacred Abode of Lord Shiva

Kedarnath Dham Uttarakhand ke Rudraprayag district mein Mandakini River valley ke upper Himalayan region mein located hai. Yeh Lord Shiva ko dedicated major pilgrimage destinations mein se ek hai aur Jyotirlinga tradition ke karan devotees ke liye special religious importance rakhta hai.

Kedarnath tak road directly temple tak nahi jaati. Pilgrims generally road journey ke baad designated base area se onward journey karte hain, jahan se temple ke liye trekking aur other permitted travel options available hote hain.

Kedarnath Yatra Highlights

  • Kedarnath Temple
  • Mandakini River
  • Gaurikund
  • Sonprayag

Approximate temple altitude: 3,583 metres above sea level.

Badrinath Dham – The Sacred Home of Lord Vishnu

Badrinath Dham Chamoli district mein Alaknanda River ke banks par situated hai. Yeh Lord Vishnu ke Badrinarayan form ko dedicated hai aur Uttarakhand ke most visited pilgrimage destinations mein count hota hai.

Badrinath ka location high Himalayan landscape ke beech hai, jahan pilgrims temple darshan ke saath nearby sacred places ko bhi explore kar sakte hain.

Badrinath Yatra Highlights

  • Badrinath Temple
  • Tapt Kund
  • Mana Village

May–June: Pleasant days (10-20°C), cold nights, roads fully open. Peak season — book hotels early.

July–August (Monsoon): Frequent landslides, especially on the Kedarnath route. Not recommended unless necessary.

September–October: Clear skies, fewer crowds, comfortable trekking weather — often the better window if your dates are flexible.

November onward: Temples close for winter; yatra resumes the following spring. Exact reopening is announced each year — see the dates table above.

The Do Dham Yatra involves high-altitude travel, with Kedarnath crossing 3,500 m.

Acclimatization: Spend a night at a mid-altitude stop like Guptkashi before pushing higher.

Elderly travellers: A basic health check-up before travel is advisable, especially for blood pressure or cardiac conditions. Consider the helicopter option for Kedarnath.

Warning signs of altitude sickness: Headache, nausea, breathlessness, dizziness — stop ascending, rest, hydrate, and inform your tour manager immediately.

Fitness prep: 2-3 weeks of daily walking before the trip noticeably reduces trekking fatigue.

This is general guidance, not medical advice — pilgrims with existing health conditions should consult a doctor before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Do Dham Yatra?

The Do Dham Yatra is a pilgrimage to two of Uttarakhand’s four sacred Himalayan shrines — Kedarnath and Badrinath — usually completed in 5 to 6 days. It’s a shorter alternative to the full Char Dham Yatra, which covers all four dhams.

Char Dham covers all four shrines (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath) over 10-12 days. Do Dham covers only Kedarnath and Badrinath in about half the time. See our full Char Dham Yatra Package if you’d like to cover all four.

The best months are May-June and September-October 2026. Kedarnath opens on 22 April 2026 and Badrinath on 23 April 2026, with both closing around mid-November. Avoid the monsoon months of July and August due to landslides and road blockages.

Yes, all pilgrims must register before starting the journey. You can register online through the official Uttarakhand Tourist Care registration portal, or at offline counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun. We also assist with guided registration for our package customers.

Kedarnath requires roughly a 16-18 km trek one way from Gaurikund or Sonprayag, which can be covered on foot, by pony, palki, or helicopter. Badrinath is fully motorable and needs no trekking.

Road-based Do Dham Yatra packages with Chaukhamba Travels start from around ₹13,999 per person for a 6 night / 7 day trip with shared accommodation. Helicopter packages for Kedarnath typically start around ₹25,000-30,000 per person depending on season and seat availability.

Yes, with planning. Seniors and young children can use pony, palki, or helicopter services to reach Kedarnath instead of trekking. We recommend a medical check-up before travel, gradual acclimatisation, and carrying prescribed medication for high-altitude conditions.

Chaukhamba Travels operates Do Dham Yatra packages starting from Dehradun, Haridwar, and Delhi, with pickup and drop arranged at your city’s railway station, bus stand, or airport.

Pack warm layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, sturdy trekking shoes, personal medicines, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, a valid photo ID, and printed copies of your yatra registration and hotel vouchers.

Yes. Chaukhamba Travels offers fully customised Do Dham Yatra itineraries, including choice of starting city, hotel category, helicopter add-ons, group size, and extra days for rest or sightseeing at Rishikesh, Devprayag, or Chopta.

Yes, many pilgrims add 1-2 extra days in Haridwar or Rishikesh before or after the yatra for Ganga Aarti, river rafting, or sightseeing. Let us know while booking and we’ll adjust your itinerary accordingly.

Network coverage is patchy in high-altitude stretches, especially on the Kedarnath trek. BSNL and Jio tend to have the widest coverage in the region, but expect limited or no signal at Kedarnath itself.

The road distance between Kedarnath (via Guptkashi) and Badrinath is approximately 210-220 km, covering around 8-9 hours of driving through Joshimath.
