Winter sets in the Garhwal Himalayas and Auli turns into one of the most beautiful snow destinations. Snowy expanses, views of the Himalayas, skiing and a pleasant mountain setting characterize this high-altitude village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.
Auli is in the Himalayas at about 2,800 m and has amazing views of several Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi. If you are planning on visiting Auli for the winter of 2026 – 2027 here’s everything you need to know about this mountain village.
Why Visit Auli in Winter 2026–2027?
Of course the draw here is skiing. The slopes are suitable for beginners as well as for professional skiers, and there are training courses for professionals during winter. GMVN, Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam has skiing courses and facilities at Auli.
Auli Weather and Snowfall in Winter
Winter generally arrives in Auli from late November or December, and the skiing season continues through to March. The most reliable skiing time is generally January to March, as per Uttarakhand Tourism.
However, snowfall in the Himalayas is weather-dependent, which is a factor to remember when planning a 2026–27 trip.
December
As winter sets in around December, the temperatures take a nosedive and the snow starts to fall. But here's the thing - snow conditions can be really different from one year to the next.
If you're mainly going for skiing, it's probably better to wait until January or later. This way, you'll have a better chance of good skiing conditions.
January
January is a great time to visit Auli if you're looking for a fantastic snow holiday. The whole landscape gets covered in a thick layer of snow, making it perfect for skiing. In fact, the skiing conditions are usually at their best during this month.
If you're planning a trip and want to see some snow and hit the slopes, January is a great time to go. It's one of the best months for skiing and snowfall, so you'll have a good chance of getting the winter experience you're looking for.
February
February is another great month for skiing. The slopes are still good for winter sports and the weather can be a bit nicer than the coldest days in January.
In fact it is ideal for those who want to combine skiing lessons with sightseeing.
March
You can still enjoy good skiing in March, especially early in the month. In fact, the official GMVN skiing program used to run until March, so the conditions must have been pretty good back then.
However, as temperatures rise conditions can change and travelers should check the latest snow and course conditions before traveling.
Best Time to Visit Auli for Snowfall and Skiing
Uttarakhand Tourism recommends January to March for skiing activities. Their general winter recommendation for nature-based holidays is October to March, though.
Skiing in Auli: What Makes It Special?
The slopes at Auli are really big and stretch out across the high mountains. They go from about 2,915 to 3,049 meters up. The main skiing area is around five kilometers long and has lifts to help skiers get around. GMVN says that the lifts make it easy for people to ski in this beautiful area.
The hills are surrounded by trees like oak and pine, and the Himalayan mountains make a beautiful background.
Beginners don't need to arrive knowing how to ski, as that is precisely why training programmes are offered.
The important thing is not to think that skiing is something you can master in ten minutes, as it takes balance, practice and patience.
Auli Skiing Courses
Visiting Auli has a major plus - you can sign up for skiing courses that are organized, instead of just renting gear and trying to figure it out by yourself. This way, you'll get to learn from instructors who can teach you the ropes.
GMVN's latest published programme lists three main options:
1. 3-Day Non-Certificate Course
This is the shortest option and is suitable for those who want a basic introduction to skiing.
It is ideal if:
- You have limited time
- You've never skied before
- You want to get a taste of skiing, without committing to a longer course
2. 7-Day Non-Certificate Course
A seven-day course makes more sense, if your objective is actually to learn skiing rather than simply try it once.
Having more time means beginners can practice and work on their techniques even more. This extra time is really helpful for them to get better.
3. 14-Day Certificate Course
The 14-day certificate course is the most intense option among the courses listed by GMVN.
It is more appropriate for those who want structured training and a certificate, rather than just a few recreational skiing sessions.
For the 2025–26 season, GMVN listed the skiing season as January to March and the 3-day, 7-day and 14-day programmes. The published schedule included multiple batches throughout January, February and March.
What About 2026–27?
The latest published 2025–26 Indian adult fees were:
| Course | With Food & Lodging | Without Food & Lodging |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Days | ₹8,900 | ₹4,800 |
| 7 Days | ₹19,900 | ₹10,000 |
| 14 Days Certificate | ₹39,000 | ₹19,000 |
The prices listed are for the 2025-26 season, and don't reflect the confirmed rates for 2026-27. According to GMVN, the course package comes with training, access to ski lifts, and specific ski gear. If you opt for an accommodation package, you can expect to stay in a shared dorm and enjoy Indian meals.
How to Enrol for a Skiing Course in Auli
Step 1: Choose the Suitable Course
GMVN offers multiple skiing programmes: the 3-day course (without certification), the 7-day course (without certification), and the 14-day course (with certificate)
From my perspective, I think the 7-day option is a good choice if you have the time. With 3 days, you can try out skiing, but with 7 days, you'll have a chance to really improve your skills.
Step 2: Check GMVN’s Schedules
To plan your skiing trip, visit GMVN's official website and check their schedule to find out which courses are currently open.
Do not plan your flights, train tickets, and overall travel itinerary around the old course schedule
Step 3: Fill Out the Application
To sign up for a course, you need to follow the steps outlined by GMVN. First, you have to fill out a form and go through a specific booking process. When you get to the online booking page, they'll ask you for some information - like the course you want to take, where you'from, where you'd like to stay, your name, phone number, email, and when you're planning to arrive. You'll need to provide all this to complete your booking.
Step 4: Pay the Dependent Amount
As instructed in the published terms by GMVN, the applicants need to pay 50% of the course fee along with the application, and the rest 50% will be paid at the beginning of the course at Auli
Since there are likely to be changes in the terms and payment procedure from season to season, make sure you receive the most updated information when applying for the 2026-27 skiing course.
Step 5: Submit the Mandatory Documents
As instructed by GMVN, the applicants should carry the mandatory documents with them. They must bring a recent passport-size photograph for the ski and chair lifts. In the case of those below 18 years old, GMVN’s published rules explicitly say that a date of birth certificate and a bonafide student certificate are required for the course.
Step 6: Arrive before the Course Commences
GMVN suggests reporting at Auli the day before the course starts. On the day of arrival for the course, the participants are requested to register themselves and collect their equipment. To get the most updated information about Auli skiing, GMVN suggests contacting 9568006629 and 8755934365

Ropeway Ride
This place is about 3 km from Auli and it's really something special when it snows. If you're just starting out with trekking, Uttarakhand Tourism says this is a great route for you. You'll get to see some amazing views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Dron Parvat. The scenery is just breathtaking, making it a must-visit spot for anyone looking for a fun and exciting experience in the snow. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or just looking for a new adventure, this place has something to offer. So why not give it a try and see what it's all about?
If you want to take a break from skiing for a while, a winter walk towards the direction of the Gorson makes a perfect side-trip.
Auli Artificial Lake
This lake is really something special, and it's even more stunning when it's all snowy. It's a man-made lake, but it's still a big draw for people. The snow makes it look even more beautiful.
How to Reach Auli
The most common way to reach Auli is via Joshimath.
By Air
If you are making a plan of visiting Auli then make sure that the nearest airport to Auli is Jolly Grant Airport which is near Dehradun so you can take this airport and then go to Joshimath and then head to Auli. As per Uttarakhand tourism site, this airport is about 286 km from Auli so it is a good idea to do a bit of research on the distances so that you have an idea of the lengths you need to cover while you are exploring the area.
By Train
You can take a train to Haridwar or Rishikesh, and then finish your trip by car. This is a good way to get there. It's pretty straightforward - just take the train to one of those cities, and then drive the rest of the way.
By Road
Joshimath is the main gateway to Auli.
You can reach from Joshimath to Auli in two ways. First you can take the road and second you can reach by taking the ropeway. According to Uttarakhand tourism, the road distance is around 14 to 16 Kms but this distance may vary from where you are starting. If the roadways are difficult, you can also choose the easier option of ropeway which is more convenient as well as gives you an amazing view.
Snowfall can block the road at times. So it helps to look at the weather update before you set out.
Where to Stay in Auli
You can find all sorts of places to stay, from fancy resorts and hotels to more budget-friendly GMVN properties.
GMVN runs a few properties, like the Auli Ski Resort and the GMVN Auli Nanda Devi Eco Tourist Resort. You can find the Auli Ski Resort in Auli, Chamoli. If you're planning ahead, you can already book a stay at some of their properties until 2027.
Staying at the accommodation provided with your skiing course can be a great idea. You won't have to worry about finding a separate place to stay or figuring out how to get to the course every day. It's just easier all around. Plus, you can focus on your skiing and enjoy the experience without the hassle of daily commutes.
If you are travelling independently, compare:
- Distance from ski slopes
- Heating arrangements
- Hot water
- Food
- Snow access
- Parking

Important Tips for Auli Winter 2026–27
Before you go, check the snow conditions. Just because it is the season, does not mean that it will snow on a particular day. It is impossible to tell beforehand, so make sure and check what the forecast is like before you plan anything.
Do not forget about altitude. Auli is located at approximately 2,800 metres, so you need to give yourself some time to adjust.
Book skiing courses early. Course batches have limited seats. Previous GMVN schedules have shown batches with only 10 seats for some courses.
As a novice, do not hit the slopes on your own. Get professional training from an expert and also adhere to the safety guidelines.
Leave room for any changes in your travel plans, as conditions in the mountains may hinder your drive in the open air, cable car and activities.
Always keep some money on hand in case of emergency. In remote mountainous areas, network coverage and modes of payment can be incredibly far-reaching.
